After graduating from high school, Long attended Villanova University. During his college years, he played for the Wildcats and started every game as a freshman. During his freshman year, he racked up 99 tackles. He ended his college career as a senior with 84 tackles. He began his time as a tight end but was quickly moved to the defensive line. While playing college football, Long earned a degree in communications and became the Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

Howie began his NFL career in 1981 after being selected by the Oakland Raiders during the NFL Draft. This was the beginning of a 13-year career with the team, during which he wore number 75. After a few years, Howie earned a number of awards, including NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 1985, he won the George S. Halas Trophy.
